The problem
Steps cut from sandstone under trees had turned almost black with lichen and leaf staining, and the treads were slippery after rain.
What we did
We let a biocide work on each tread, scrubbed the dead growth away by hand and rinsed gently with a wide fan. No acid and no pressure on the joints.
The result
The orange and purple banding in the stone came back, the treads have grip again, and the stone surface was left whole.
